CD of the week
Haydn would have been delighted
18 works, 18 stiles and 18 dedications. What contemporary have to say about Joseph Haydn? A lot.

Joseph Haydn would have liked this for sure.
Not only his works are on international season schedules in this commemorative year 2009 (200th bicentenary of his death), also some new may develop on this occasion.
“D2H”, “DedicatedToHaydn”, was the magic formula at Haydn Festival Eisenstadt, wisely programmed as usual by Artistic Director Walter Reicher.
18 composers had been invited to devote themselves with Haydn’s music; 18 premieres on one weekend were the stunning result.
Those who could not be present in Burgenland’s Eisenstadt may now listen to those 18 compositions on three CDs (Capriccio). In fact played by the performers of all premieres, the excellent, virtuoso, technically very fine Haydn Trio Eisenstadt. Harald Kosik (piano), Verena Stourzh (violin) and Hannes Gradwohl (cello) proof that they feel home at any sound-direction, that they may switch perfectly between the single styles.
Brilliant mix
And that is essential for those 18 pieces with approaches as differing as those of the Artists. As for instance Hollywood-Legend Lalo Schifrin (“Mission Impossible”) who did with “Elegy and Meditation” indeed write a piece for piano trio. Yet it must sound like an entire Symphony Orchestra time and again. Terrific.
South African Bongani Ndodana-Breen on the other hand makes the steppe dance in his “Two Nguni Dances”. Yui Kakinuma from Japan and Chinese Xiaogang Ye rely on Asian flair which’s meditative character also becomes distinctly audible at Spanish José María Sánchez-Verdú.
Much joke
Brilliantly witty is William Bolcom’s (USA) contribution “Haydn Go Seek”; also many other pieces abound with good ideas. As for instance Johanna Doderer’s “2.Klaviertrio”, which once again expels her as a brilliant composer. Quite bulkier is “schatten.risse” by Elisabeth Harnik. Yet invigorating worth hearing are all pieces.
